Parades, Fires, Floods, Oddities, and the Black Dahlia Murder Case

Links to the Photo Database of the Los Angeles Public Library

This page is devoted to one-of-a-kind places and events in the history of West Adams and its neighboring communities. We have started with Parades, because they are fun, gone on to some of the fires and floods of the past. In Odds and Ends we have a few interesting buildings, cockeyed inventions, and interesting photos. And finally we wind up with a selection from the Library's large set of photos on one of the city's most famous murders, the Black Dahlia case of 1947, where the body was found just a few blocks south of West Adams. The photo above is of flooded West Adams Blvd., 1933.

The Black Dahlia Murder Case

On January 15, 1947, Betty Bersinger was out walking past 3800 S. Norton Avenue, an empty lot a few blocks east of Crenshaw between Rodeo Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (then Santa Barbara) when she saw something white lying in the grass. It was the nude body of a woman, drained of blood and surgically cut in half at the waist. Thus began Los Angeles' most famous unsolved murder. The victim was 22-year-old aspiring actress Elizabeth Short, soon dubbed the Black Dahlia. The location is in Leimert Park, a few blocks south of West Adams. Despite many suspects and numerous confessions, all proved to be false, the crime was never solved. It has been the subject of many books, films, and television programs. The Los Angeles Public Library Photo Database contains more than 80 photographs about the case. We have selected a few that give a feel of the event.
