Title: Lillian Copeland, female weight-thrower, 1929
Description: Lillian Copeland was the first great female weight-thrower, setting numerous records in the shot put, javelin, and discus. The L.A. High and USC grad took the silver medal in the discus at the 1928 Amsterdam Games, the first women's track and field event to be decided in Olympic history. Four years later, at the Los Angeles Olympics, Copeland won the gold medal on her final throw. A Jewish athlete, she chose to boycott the 1936 Olympic Games in Nazi Germany. Description: USC coach Howard Jones (left) demonstrates blocking technique on wrestling champ "Strangler" Lewis. Jones took the job after Notre Dame's Knute Rockne turned down the Trojans. Under Jones' direction, USC and the "Thundering Herd" won three undisputed national titles in 16 years. He won five Rose Bowls, including the 1939 game, when his Trojans upset undefeated, unscored-upon Duke, 7-3, on reserve quarterback Doyle Nave's last-minute touchdown pass to Al Krueger. Description: USC grad Clarence "Buster" Crabbe, en route to winning the 400-meter freestyle event. Like another Olympic gold-medallist, Johnny Weissmuller, Crabbe starred as Tarzan in the movies, but he gained fame playing two science fiction heroes: Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon.
